Causes of Burn Injuries

Burn injuries are complex injuries that may be caused by heat, cold, light, chemicals, radiation, friction or electricity. Burns caused by heat are called thermal burns. Depending on how deep they are, burn injuries are classified as first degree, second degree or third degree.  The severity of the burn is determined by how deep a burn is, the location on the body, how much of the body the burn covers, and the victim’s age.  Burn injuries may be caused by a multitude of possible accidents, including:

First Degree Burns

First-degree burns are the least serious and most common type of burn injury. They affect only the first layer of the skin involve minimal tissue damage.  If the skin is not broken, first-degree burns will usually heal on their own within a few days.  First-degree burns are not life-threatening, but can leave a victim permanently scarred.

Second Degree Burns

Second degree burns damage the top layer of the skin (epidermis) and the second layer of the skin (dermis). More serious than first degree burns, second degree burns may require surgery and will take much longer to heal than first degree burns.

Third Degree Burns

Third degree burns are the most serious type of burn and usually result in extensive scarring. Third degree burns always require medical treatment, usually in a hospital burn unit. Treatment will vary depending on whether the burn was caused by corrosive chemicals, flames, electricity, or extremely hot objects. The burned area may not be painful because nerve endings in the skin are destroyed, but the areas of skin around the burn will be excruciatingly painful. Skin grafting may be required for the wounded area to heal. This operating room procedure involves transferring unburned skin to the burned area.

Burn Injury Complications

All burn injuries carry the risk of complications, especially second and third degree burns.  Children and the elderly are more likely than healthy adults to experience complications from burn injuries.  Complications from burn injuries include:

  • Infection
  • Loss of body heat
  • Loss of sensation (hyperalgesia)
  • Loss of skin elasticity

Burn injuries are a serious health care problem. There are more about 200 burn care centers in the United States.
