Oakland Spinal Cord Injury Attorneys

One of the most catastrophic injuries a person can endure is a spinal cord injury. Damage to the spinal cord can result in complete loss of function and sensation (paralysis). The spinal cord does not need to be severed for a person to sustain permanent, irreparable damage. Automobile accidents, motorcycle accidents, bicycle accidents, pedestrian accidents, construction accidents, falls, acts of violence and sporting accidents may cause spinal cord injuries.

If you or someone you love has suffered a spinal cord injury that was caused by the negligent, careless or reckless actions of another, you may be entitled to substantial compensation for your medical expenses, past and future lost wages, pain and suffering, and other expenses related to your injury. The law firm of Estey & Bomberger has a proven track record of obtaining multi-million dollar verdicts and settlements for victims of catastrophic injuries, including traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries. We can help you bring a claim against the negligent party or parties that caused the injury and obtain full and fair compensation.

Spinal Cord Injury Classifications

In the U.S., about 30 people suffer a spinal cord injury each day. Doctors will classify spinal cord injuries as either complete or incomplete, depending on the injury:

  • Complete spinal cord injury: A patient with a complete spinal cord injury has no sensation or voluntary movement ability below the level of injury. Both sides of the body are equally affected.
  • Incomplete spinal cord injury: Patients with incomplete spinal cord injuries have some sensation or voluntary movement ability below the level of injury, although it may be limited. One side of the body may have more functioning or sensation than the other side.

Doctors will diagnose a spinal cord injury with a physical examination and other diagnostic tests, including X-rays, CT scans, MRI’s, and blood tests.

Long Term Care for Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord injury treatment will be tailored to the unique needs of the victim based on many factors, including the victims age and general health, the severity of the spinal cord injury, the victim’s tolerance for specific procedures and medications. Surgery may be necessary to relieve pressure surrounding an injury and stabilize any fractured vertebrae.

Spinal cord injuries are life-changing events, and due to partial or total paralysis, a spinal cord injury victim’s ability to live independently may be severely compromised. Activities such as getting out of bed in the morning, getting dressed and preparing a meal may be impossible without assistance. Some spinal cord injury victims require around-the clock nursing care for the remainder of their life.  A spinal cord injury patient may require one or more rehabilitation programs, such as:

  • Acute rehabilitation programs
  • Day-treatment programs
  • Long-term rehabilitation programs
  • Sub-acute rehabilitation programs
  • Transitional living programs
  • Vocational rehabilitation programs.
